UK, Remote

Research Engineer (Java, Cloud MLOps)

The Opportunity

Featurespace is launching a new R&D division to design and develop a cutting-edge cloud-native MLOps platform for stateful real-time analytics, and we are looking to build a small team of people with a “start-up mindset” to take ownership of this project.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a talented individual to join the team as a Research Engineer, working alongside our Research Fellow on an innovative product that will make a real difference, not only to our existing customers, but also across a multitude of different businesses and industries. If you want to be part of the team that builds scalable distributed solutions to process big data, Featurespace wants to hear from you.

We are looking to hire multiple people for this team, across a range of experience levels; from bright graduates to those at senior or principal level. Most important to us is attitude – we’re looking for entrepreneurial spirit, excitement to build a new product and to take ownership of the process end-to-end, and the willingness to wear different hats every day and to go the extra mile to help build something amazing.

This is a fully remote role to be based in the UK, and whilst it would be a plus to be able to very occasionally visit the Cambridge office to meet up with team members, this isn’t a definitive requirement for this role.

Day to Day

  • Working within a small team to design large-scale, real-time distributed architectures
  • Delivering new features: from specification, through development, QA, and into final deployment
  • Providing input into future technology development
  • Working with Data Science teams to ensure APIs are relevant and usable
  • Supporting your code throughout its lifetime
  • There will be an on-call rota for your code in production

About you

We are looking for people with a “T-shaped” set of skills; a broad range of interests and experience in technology combined with strong expertise in one area. This team operates and develops across the entire stack and eco-system. Aside from just development, the ideal candidate needs to be able and willing to turn their hand to automation, testing, as well as contributing to architecture discussions. Some attributes we’re looking for are below:

  • Experience of designing and developing scalable distributed applications in Java or another object-oriented language
  • Comfortable working with large codebases with knowledge of how to keep them maintainable.
  • Solid understanding of distributed system principles

In addition, we’re looking for experience in one or more of the following specialist areas:

  • ML Ops – operational tools for running mission-critical real time analytic systems
  • Cloud architecture – an understanding of the idioms of cloud computing and an understanding of the strengths and trade-offs in terms of costs/security between various cloud services
  • Containers and container orchestration – understanding of common Kubernetes deployment patterns and an ability to automate deployments
  • Machine learning and Data engineering  – understanding of the patterns of analytic computation including model training for deep neural networks as well as classical ML systems, strong understanding of map-reduce concepts
  • CI / CD systems – experience automating the complete lifecycle of software deployment including performance, security and reliability testing as well as production deployment
  • Concurrent Java – Understanding of the concurrency primitives and memory sharing model
  • Front end development – ability to build simple UIs using frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue

We recognise that the set of skills we are looking for are unusually broad, so if you are strong in one or two areas and are eager to learn about the others, we would love to hear from you!

Personal Qualities

The work is often challenging and fast paced. We are looking for someone who has the following qualities:

  • A focus on personal achievement and responsibilities
  • Enjoys working in a team of like-minded and intelligent people to solve complex problems
  • A ‘start-up’, entrepreneurial mentality – excited to build a new product, wear different hats, and go the extra mile
  • Enthusiasm
  • A passion to work for one of the fastest growing fraud prevention technologies in the world

And most importantly, a small-company attitude: willingness to adapt to a variable role and a great can-do attitude.

How to apply

If you think you’re a good fit for the role above, we would love to hear from you.

Fill out the short application form, upload your CV and one of the team will get back to you.
