Software Engineer – ML Research

The Opportunity

We’re on the lookout for a Software Engineer to join a small team of Research Scientists and Engineers, working on analytical innovations that help in our fight against financial crime. You’ll be developing software for deploying deep learning models at scale, leveraging cloud-native technologies and modern MLOps practices, whilst optimising software and infrastructure for research experiments. Working alongside our team of Research Scientists, you’ll support them in developing robust technology demonstrators for ML innovations.

This role will be based in our Cambridge office; this is a hybrid role so you will ideally be comfortable coming into the office twice a week. If you’re interested in the role but require more flexibility, please speak to us! 

Day to Day

  • Engineer robust and maintainable software for deploying deep learning models at scale, leveraging cloud-native technologies and modern MLOps practices
  • Optimize and adapt software in the face of user feedback or evolving requirements, following agile engineering practices
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure for research experiments
  • Support research scientists in developing robust technology demonstrators for analytical innovations
  • Provide engineering input into future analytical strategies and product development
  • Participate in the planning and review processes for the wider Innovation team
  • Champion software engineering best practices and processes, including supporting and mentoring researchers

About you

Must haves

  • Academic background in a relevant discipline, e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering
  • Proficiency with Java or Python
  • Experience designing, developing, maintaining and evolving software, ideally within a software engineering team
  • Familiarity with cloud computing and container orchestration platforms (e.g. AWS, Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with modern software engineering practices (e.g. agile, IDEs, source control, testing, code review)

Great to haves

  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • Familiarity with the machine learning model lifecycle
  • Familiarity with distributed system principles
  • Experience with performance tuning and profiling
  • Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB, DynamoDB)
  • Familiarity with the implementation of interactive applications for data science
